A new restaurant in Berlin, Germany is offering up dishes from the Stone Age. Sauvage–which means “savage” or “wild” in French–proudly serves only food that was available to our hunter-gatherer ancestors that roamed the planet roughly two million years ago. That means a lot of raw fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds and herbs. Absent from the menu is bread, cheese, sugar and all the other good stuff from our modern everyday lives. Even alcohol!
Sauvage’s Boris Leite-Poço told Spiegel Online that his restaurant is the first of its kind in Europe and the shape of things to come. “Many people think the Paleolithic diet is just some hipster trend, but it’s a worldwide phenomenon, with an online community that spans the globe. The trend is probably strongest in the United States, where people who have had enough of the fast food way of life and generations of illness have taken it up.”
Although everything at Sauvage is caveman appropriate there are some actual dishes. Dinners can partake of smoked salmon with herb dressing, salads, and a gluten and sugar free spicy pumpkin pie.
Things to ponder:
How is Sauvage Stone Age authentic if there were no restaurant’s in the Stone Age? Cavemen didn’t go out to eat and they sure weren’t able to pay with a Visa or Master Card. Also, why does this German restaurant have a French name? It’s not a French restaurant; it’s a caveman restaurant. Did caveman cuisine start in France? Explain this to me.
